West London Cycling raises £3,000 for charity
Six West London Cycling members raised over £3,000 for charity over the festive period by doing the Festive 500 challenge for Harrisons Fund. The charity raises money for research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.
Duchenne is a relatively rare underfunded disease which mainly affects boys, who are born with it and will die before the age of 20. Their muscles degenerate meaning that they spend the latter part of their short lives, incapacitated in wheelchairs. It really is all about supporting research here, current efforts are unlikely to save someone now living but could save many in the future, not just from the disease itself but also from the heartbreak it brings to parents and relatives. Research is underfunded due to the fact the disease does not affect high volumes of young boys. However, it is still devastating!
Harrison’s fund was set up by Alex Smith, whose son Harrison was born with Duchenne. Nick Taussig has two sons with Duchenne, both will die but Nick started raising money through cycle rides to fund research in the hope that future parents don’t have to go through what his family are experiencing.
The six intrepid riders above are Samir Doshi, Baz Mistry, Bryn Evans, Gurpreet Dhindsa, Rafa Nunez and Dave Morrison.
