With quick link chains, you’ll need chain pliers….
Of course, quick links on chains are simpler than a chain tool and chain pins but you still need a tool to push the master link in both directions when unlinking, or linking, a chain. Specially shaped pliers are available and can fit in your saddlebag, along with spare masterlinks ready for the day your chain breaks whilst out cycling.
We rather like the Wolf Tool pliers, although they certainly aren’t cheap. They close magnetically for when not being used and open up to reveal some nifty treasure inside. One version can be used to store your spare chain links (and can be used as a tyre lever and spoke nipple adjuster too) whilst the other is a multi tools…. great design, but not cheap!
