LEARN ABOUT ONLINE STEERING HERE

Well that was interesting, and we are not fully sure we can give a clear steer (pun intended) on what was going on! Different riders are giving different feedback, some adapting to the new steering on Wahoo RGT quicker than others and, if you’ve been on CADEsport in recent months you’ll have probably had an advantage here …. although the two platforms are configured differently, so the advantage may not be as clear cut as you’d expect.

The fundamental thing to understand is that steering allows you to choose lane, you do not steer to navigate corners. However, it is advantageous to choose the inside lane when cornering. If you steer left or right into another rider, they get pushed aside and quite a few riders didn’t seem to like this. Our view is that we think RGT got this the wrong way around, CADE is configured so that you can’t steer into another rider, so you are blocked by riders either side, as in real life. But, we think riders will adapt to RGT’s method and will adapt tactics accordingly, which could make for some pretty exciting racing, we’ll see!

Watching the race, it seemed that some riders were using steering more efficiently than others. If you don’t use the steering for a while it switches off and you will revert to ‘Auto Avoid’ until you use it again. Again, this looks at it the other way around to CADE, where you can choose Auto Steer and the app will take corners efficiently for you. On RGT, you just stay in that lane unless overtaking another rider. Consequently, you risk getting gradually being pushed to an outside lane and stuck there if you can’t steer.

Over time, riders will adapt and races will elvolve around these dynamics, but here there was a lot of uncertainty; as a course that used to deliver a mass bunch sprint, saw a handful of riders contest the win with Brian Hodges taking a clear win in the final few hundred metres.

We made observations in the commentary, which you can view by using the link above, and we have had feedback from riders in the aftermath of the race. Some thought they weren’t alert enough with the steering and when the rider in front moved across and the draft disappeared, it seems some got dropped. This is a tactic we expected and we think will evolve. Clearly some peole realised that aiming for the inside lane on corners was more important than others perceived. We saw more ‘lines’ than normal, with riders picking wheels to draft, which seemed to mean less of a peleton bunched across the road. However, in a large race, this could mean a rider way back in the line may be badly placed to make up any bunch splits that may occur ahead. Staying in, say, 4th wheel may be the ambition here …. let’s see how it plays out.

We think there will be some fascinating evolutions over the coming months, which will make these races ultra interesting. Not only that, we have two brand new routes coming up, The Harrow Haul (Wednesday 1st March) and The Wembley Wheelspin on 15th March (A race around Wembley Football Stadium).

We are also every Wednseday at 7.30pm UK Time now, alternating between WahooRGT one week and CADEsport the next so tyou can practice both steering skillsets and become a cross-platform ace on the best two platforms!

So, turning to the race, we saw an uncharacteristic small group finish on this course, superbly won by Brain Hodges just ahead of Karl Axel Zander Persson. In the General Classification John Sammut, Wouter Claes, Jan Vana and Johan Arrhen all made up some ground on Nick Greenhalgh, but Nick has a clear lead still. In the Ladies League Caroline Reuter held off Aileen Davidson, they finished close but in a bunch and three riders squeezed between them costing Aileen a few points in her very first race! Well done ladies, great racing.
